Commended in Best Large Back Garden category - Bromley in Bloom

Awards for Best Large Back Garden 2018

It’s been a fun, but exhausting year maintaining the garden, especially with the exceptionally hot weather we experienced during the mid-Summer months, but this hasn’t stopped me from entering my garden into two competitions.

Firstly I was visited by representatives from Coolings Garden Centre who were judging this years ‘Bromley in Bloom 2018’ competition. They were especially impressed with my vegetable area.

I was very happy to be Commended in the Best Back Garden category, winning a certificate and shield.

I was also awarded with a Silver award in the Best Large Back Garden category in The London Garden Society (All London Championship) .

Both set of judging took place in mid-July during the height of the hot weather.

Replanting New Beds (August update)

Last week I replanted 2 beds in the garden that had red geraniums in as they were looking really tired so I’ve taken them out and put new plants in.

I’ve put the geraniums that are still ok into the greenhouse And will try and keep them going until next year.

I think the beds look better now.

I have since added a bit more colour.

Professional photographs of the garden

I was very excited to get a visit early on Friday morning from professional Photographer, Leigh Clapp, who took some photos of the garden for next years NGS, to be published next year.

Leigh is such a wonderful garden photographer, these are the photos she took of my previous garden at Harcourt House in Bromley here >

Added a new bed to Orchard

It was bothering me for a while, the empty patch at the back of the Orchard, so earlier this month I decided it was time to add a bit of interest and colour to the area.

The area before:

After clearing the area and plotting out the bed, I chose the following plants:

  • Viburnum
  • Buddleja candy pink and sky blue
  • Lobelia
  • Achillea violet and pink
  • Penstemon red and violet
  • Sweet William

New flowerbed in Orchard

I have been busy adding new features to the garden and this week I have finished digging out and planting in a new flowerbed in the Orchard, just outside my greenhouse.

I felt the orchard needed a little extra feature to it, especially as I have already added some flowerbeds to the side.

I am very please with the outcome.

We are opening for 2018

Get your diaries at the ready, because Freda’s Garden is opening up to the public this Summer.

Freda will be opening her garden with a full afternoon of musical entertainment on Sunday 1st July (2-5pm). This is always a popular event, and along with the new changes Freda has brought to her garden, this will be a truly wonderful afternoon not to be missed by both new and frequent visitors. Alongside the entertainment will be light refreshments, Freda’s art gallery (where visitors can purchase copies of her prints) and a variety of stalls. This year Freda will be raising money for the NSPCC.

Freda will then be opening her garden as part of the National Garden Scheme Open Gardens on Sunday 19th August (12-4pm). This will be an opportunity to enjoy the tranquility of the garden in the latter part of the Summer. The afternoon will offer light refreshments to visitors, and again they will be able to visit Freda’s art gallery.
