Commended in Best Large Back Garden category - Bromley in Bloom

Awards for Best Large Back Garden 2018

It’s been a fun, but exhausting year maintaining the garden, especially with the exceptionally hot weather we experienced during the mid-Summer months, but this hasn’t stopped me from entering my garden into two competitions.

Firstly I was visited by representatives from Coolings Garden Centre who were judging this years ‘Bromley in Bloom 2018’ competition. They were especially impressed with my vegetable area.

I was very happy to be Commended in the Best Back Garden category, winning a certificate and shield.

I was also awarded with a Silver award in the Best Large Back Garden category in The London Garden Society (All London Championship) .

Both set of judging took place in mid-July during the height of the hot weather.

Enlarged bed - Freda's Garden

Enlarging Flower Beds in the Orchard

It’s be a wonderful year of openings. I’ve had 26 in total, including two photoshoots and 3 large garden openings!

Now my openings for the year have come to an end, I am beginning to plan some changes for the garden.  To start with I am enlarging two of the beds in the Orchard and making them a lot bigger.

I extended these two beds to maker a bigger impact in the orchard as I felt they were too narrow. These plants I have put in these areas are: Arum Lily, Nandina Domestica (Magical Sunrise), Heuchera (Midnight Ruffle), Cordyline, Weigela (Summer Red), Virburnum (Dawn), Virburnum (Gold) and Abelia (Edward Goucher)

I have finished now but will have to keep them well watered over the next few months. I am rather pleased with the results.

My plan now is to have a very long pergola built at the end of the orchard and to cover it with 5 large climbing plants. I’m really excited about this!!

Bromley U3A Theatre Group

Garden visit from the Bromley U3A Theatre Group

Today I had my very last group visit for 2018, and what a lovely day to end it with.  The weather was glorious and the visitors were fantastic.

There were 25 people in the group from the Bromley U3A theatre group and everyone had a lovely afternoon.  They said they would be back next year for another visit, so I’m already thinking of my updates to the garden for 2019

I usually open the garden to groups in the Summer months between June and September.  If you would like to book a visit for your group in 2019, please do drop me a line.

They also had a lot of fun with my pot luck, which raises extra funds charity.

Group visits are by appointment only, and I usually open the garden between the 1st July and the 31st August. If you would like to arrange a group visit, then please contact me for further details.

Visit from Knole U3A

A lovely group of visitors came yesterday from the Knole U3A to see my garden. The weather was perfect for them and after the recent rain, the lawn is finally looking lush again which helps the garden look full of colour.

The visitors enjoyed their tea and cake in the sun, and I received so many lovely comments about the garden.

Replanting New Beds (August update)

Last week I replanted 2 beds in the garden that had red geraniums in as they were looking really tired so I’ve taken them out and put new plants in.

I’ve put the geraniums that are still ok into the greenhouse And will try and keep them going until next year.

I think the beds look better now.

I have since added a bit more colour.

U3A Swanley Gardening Group visiting Freda's Garden

Group visit from the Swanley U3A

It was another busy week in the garden for me last week, as not only did I have a number of group visits, but I also had my last NGS Open Garden of the Summer on the Sunday.

This delightful group of ladies and gentlemen visited me from the U3A Swanley gardening group. My art gallery was also very popular with the group, who purchased a print or two from me.
